This Elevator company called on us to provide a
one-day Train the Trainer course at their conference event in Las
Vegas. It was group of approximately 25 subject matter experts and
managers who had been assigned a training and coaching/mentor function
within their company, but had not received any previous training
skill development.
The goal was to present different options for communicating
information effectively, both as trainer and as a coach. Typically,
people teach others how they were taught, and it’s not necessarily
what works the best for a particular situation. For this group,
we set out to demonstrate alternatives to traditional methods of
teaching. At the end of the day, the group was very excited about
the new possibilities they had discovered that would make their
jobs more enjoyable, teaching easier, and transfer of skills more
effective.
Our training methodology is no stranger to any
industry or subject matter—it works for any situation that requires
information to be communicated, integrated, and used back in the
workplace. It involves the “whole person” in the learning process
and encourages involvement, collaboration, reflection, and action.
At first, it may be uncomfortable for trainers
and instructors to learn how to teach in a completely different
way, especially when poor role models have existed in the past.
But with just a little practice, and some support, any trainer can
turn their teaching sessions into dynamic learning opportunities
for their participants.
After the training in Las Vegas , the training
manager had the following to say:
"Our goal was to open our trainers' eyes to
different ways of engaging/involving their technical audiences.
We wanted to get them to use a whole brain approach when developing
programs they would lead. It was received very enthusiastically
by our audience of Elevator Technicians, and really met its goal".
