This client needed 4 train the trainer sessions,
one per week for a full month of training. The groups were small
with 4-6 in each. The groups consisted of mentors and managers that
needed help with more effective training techniques.
What is remembered most from this experience is
the narrow construction trailer that had been converted into a meeting
and training facility. Tables were arranged in boardroom style due
to the constricted space, which didn’t allow the facilitator to
easily build rapport and connect with those sitting further away.
We realized that it was going to be a challenge
to do anything creative with the room set-up. After trying a number
of different configurations, we finally came up with one where tables
were placed in rows and slightly angled to allow for walking space.
This rearrangement shifted the “energy” of the
room. Everyone noticed how they were more connected to the training
environment, the facilitator, and everyone else in the group.
The importance of taking time to optimize the training
room set-up should not be underestimated. Try to create an open
environment where people can effortlessly interact and collaborate
in groups and where the facilitator can make a closer connection
with all participants.
